Looking for Monopoly online? What changes with an independent alternative in a browser

Ahmed Moaz · 19 October 2026

Many people who search for Monopoly online are really searching for a way to play a property trading game with friends who are not in the room. They may or may not care about the brand. If you are one of them, there is a choice to make: an online version of the famous game, or an independent Monopoly alternative like Property Rush, the one I build. Here are the differences that matter once the board is in a browser.

What is the same?

The genre. You throw two dice, buy cities, charge rent, build houses and hotels, draw cards and visit Prison. If you know one property game, you will understand another in a minute. The ancestor of all of them, The Landlord's Game, was patented in 1904.

What changes when it goes online?

Several things, for any version:

These are real advantages, and the reason property games suit screens so well.

What does an independent alternative do differently?

Property Rush has its own board, its own cards and its own economy. It does not use the famous names or the famous board. A few rules are chosen with the browser in mind:

How do the two feel to play?

The biggest difference is not in the rules but in the setting. A familiar board brings a lot of memory with it: the names, the colours, the same arguments you had as a child. A new board is a fresh start. Property Rush has eight countries instead of familiar streets, and its cards have their own jokes, so a family playing it is not replaying an old game but learning a new one.

Some families like that, because nobody has the advantage of thirty years of practice. A parent who always wins at the famous game has to relearn the prices, and a teenager has as good a chance as anyone.

Which should you choose?

It depends on what you want. If you want the familiar board, the name and the nostalgia, an official online edition is what you are looking for, and I am not offering that. If you want a property trading game that is free, runs in a browser and finishes in an evening, an independent alternative is a good fit.

Property Rush is not made by, or connected to, the company that owns the famous game, and I say so on every page.

How long does a game take?

Property Rush lists about 45 minutes, and the host can set a round limit to guarantee a finish. Long games are the most common complaint about the genre, and the limit is aimed at it.

How many can play?

Two to six, each on their own device. You send a short code and your friends take seats.

What does it cost?

Playing is free, with no download and no account for guests.

Where can you try it?

You can start a table at Boardit and play a property trading game online with friends in a few minutes. Try one game and decide whether it gives you what you were looking for.

A fair summary

Searching for the famous name gets you the familiar game. Searching for the genre gets you more choices. Both are fine, and the right answer is the one that gets your friends around a table tonight.
