Free board games online: where a property game fits beside racing, quiz and drawing games

Ahmed Moaz ·

Free board games online come in a few distinct shapes, and picking the wrong shape is the usual reason an evening stalls. Some games are races. Some are quizzes, some ask you to draw, and some turn on bluffing. A property game is another shape again: it rewards planning and haggling, and it asks for more of your time. I build one, a property trading game called Property Rush, so I can say where I think it fits and when I would pick something else.

What shapes do free board games online take?

I run six games on Boardit, and together they cover most of the shapes. That makes a fair comparison easy, because I know every rule. Here are the seat counts and listed times from the site's own game list.

The times are rough guides. Seats, house rules and how long people think all move them.

Where does a property game fit?

Property Rush lists 45 minutes, which only Ludo's longer range exceeds. What you get for that time is a choice of another sort. In a race you pick which piece to move. In a quiz you pick an answer. A property game puts other questions to you: you decide whether to buy a city, what to build, how much to bid, and whether to accept a swap. Money is the resource, and every choice has a price.

Dice still matter, and I would not pretend otherwise. They decide where you land. What you do after landing is yours, and a good negotiator can beat a lucky roller.

Which one should you open tonight?

Ask two questions: how long do you have, and how many people are coming?

Is a free property game really free to open?

On Boardit it is. You play in a browser tab, there is nothing to download, and a guest never needs an account. Boardit hosts Property Rush, and the host sends a link or a five-character code to the table.

Everyone starts with the same cash, and the host chooses how much, from 500 up to 5,000. Nothing counts rounds. The last player still holding money wins, so the purse is the dial I would reach for first. A small purse makes cash tight sooner and shortens the evening.

What do you give up by choosing the long game?

Attention, mostly. In a long game you wait while other people think. The clock limits that wait: every turn gets sixty seconds, and after that you spend from a three-minute reserve that is yours for the whole game. Past that, the table does the dull part of your move for you.

Empty seats are the other cost. If one friend cancels, the host can put a bot in that chair, and it is labelled as a bot. Three of my six games have them. The quiz, the drawing game and the bluffing game do not.

How I would choose

Match the game to the evening, not to your favourite. Short evening, big crowd or younger players: choose from the race, quiz and drawing games. Long evening, small table, people who like to bargain: take the property game.

I describe Property Rush as an independent Monopoly alternative: its board is 22 cities grouped into eight countries, nothing borrowed. Of all the free board games online I know, it is the one that most rewards patience, so play with friends who enjoy a deal.
